What is Sand Tray Therapy?
Sand tray therapy is a therapeutic modality that uses miniature figures and a tray of sand to create symbolic representations of experiences, emotions, and internal conflicts. This approach allows individuals—particularly children and adolescents—to express feelings that may be difficult to verbalize. Through the process of building scenes in the sand, clients externalize their internal world, supporting emotional regulation, trauma processing, and insight development. The therapist observes, reflects, and gently guides meaning-making as the client’s symbolic world unfolds, promoting healing, self-awareness, and a sense of safety and control.
